Frida Kahlo, born 1907 was a disabled Surrealist painter. Her art and persona have earned her the legacy of an influential and inspiring artist. Her paintings, which were very controversial at the time, depicted the raw and truthful aspects of the female experience, she was covering painful subjects such as childbirth and miscarriage. Whilst in bed, disabled and in chronic pain, Frida Kahlo displayed her true strength as it was while she was recovering and bedridden that she discovered her passion and talent for painting. Frida Kahlo did not allow sexist, societal restrictions of her time to limit her self expression. She did not hide from the difficult subjects, she used them to produce beautiful, raw works of art. It is this rawness and authenticity that makes her a feminist Icon. She took inspiration from her womanhood, and became an inspiration to many.
